Eric Holcomb and Secretary of Commerce Brad Chambers are headed to Europe this weekend to explore business development opportunities with several foreign companies that already have a presence in Indiana. They will travel to Germany and Switzerland to meet with life sciences firms to discuss further investment in Indiana’s medical device ecosystem.
“Germany and Switzerland have both been long-standing reliable partners with the Indiana for many years,” said Holcomb.
The delegation will first meet with representatives from 138 German-owned businesses that have operations in Indiana. The Indiana Economic Development Corp. says Germany is Indiana’s third-largest foreign investor.
“The war in Ukraine has had serious repercussions that have rippled across all of Europe and Asia, and I’m particularly looking forward to discussions with our German partners about how we can assist and lead our way through these times of great industry change,” said Holcomb.
The Indiana delegation will then travel to Switzerland and meet with officials from Dormakaba, a producer of advanced security systems. In 2018, the company chose Indianapolis as its North American headquarters.
They will also meet with officials from Medartis, a manufacturer of medical devices, such as orthopedics screws. The company’s U.S. headquarters is in Warsaw.
On Thursday, Holcomb will meet with pharmaceutical company Roche, the parent company of Roche Diagnostics North America in Indianapolis.
“I’m looking forward to our continued discussions around innovation and industries of the future in both countries and in Indiana,” said Sec. Chambers. “Our partnerships with Germany and Switzerland have been crucial to industry growth and technological advancement across advanced manufacturing, industry 4.0, pharmaceuticals and orthopedics, energizing R&D and providing quality career opportunities for Hoosiers.”
The IEDC says there are 535 European-owned businesses in Indiana that support nearly 118,000 jobs.
About a quarter of all Indiana exports, valued at approximately $10.3 billion, are shipped to Europe.
