The special election will be held to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Republican Jackie Walorski, who represented the 2nd District since 2013.
On August 3, Walorski and three other people died in an automobile crash involving two vehicles at the intersection of State Road 19 and SR 119 near Nappanee in Elkhart County.
Holcomb’s office says the special election will be held concurrently with the general election on November 8.
According to Holcomb’s office, a special election is required to be held under Indiana Code 3-10-8-1(3), which states, “Whenever a vacancy occurs in the office of United States Representative, unless the vacancy occurs less than seventy-four (74) days before a general election.”
In this case, the vacancy occurred more than 74 days before the November 8 general election.
