Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett has selected Randy Taylor as the next chief of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. Taylor has served as an assistant chief of the IMPD since 2017.

Taylor succeeds Bryan Roach, who announced in November he was retiring at the end of 2019.

“Randy has proven himself to be a thoughtful, community-minded leader and a dedicated advocate for those impacted by violence,” Hogsett said in a news release. “With decades of law enforcement experience in the Indianapolis community, I believe that Randy is uniquely positioned to build upon the progress of the last three years while moving the department forward with a renewed commitment to transparency, accountability, and collaboration.”

Taylor’s career began in 1987 with the Champaign Police Department in Illinois. He moved to Indianapolis in 1993 where he joined the Marion County Sheriff’s Department and eventually earned the rank of captain.

Taylor joined the IMPD in 2007 and was named commander of community affairs in 2012 and joined the department’s executive team in 2016 as assistant chief of investigations.
