Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the communities could work together on projects including a casino, convention center and a massive mixed-use development proposed for the former Radisson Hotel and Star Plaza Theatre site.
The Hobart City Council adopted a resolution last week stating that those projects together could create an "economic juggernaut" with a significant impact on the region.
The centerpiece of the collaboration would be The Farm at Crossroads Commons. Last month, Merrillville-based White Lodging announced plans for the $350 million mixed-use development in the city. The concept would include four hotels, office and residential space, farm-to-table restaurants and a farm and year-round greenhouse.
The publication says Illinois-based Tri-Land Properties Inc. has also floated plans to build a convention center at Century Plaza in Merrillville. And, while community leaders have not yet said anything specifically, they could consider making a run at a casino license that could become available with Gary’s plans to relocate the Majestic Star Casino.
