Indiana Landmarks says the 19th-century building, originally built for the Marsh-Scantlin Bakery, will be transformed into a mixed-use development with residential and retail space.
The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It served as a regional bakery for the National Biscuit Co., later renamed Nabisco, and also as the home of Geiger Moving and Storage.
Evansville-based Architectural Renovators LLC is overseeing the redevelopment effort. When complete, the building will feature 20 modern industrial-style apartments featuring original hardwood floors and exposed brick walls. It will also feature three ground-level retail spaces. Crews have already installed a new roof and are now repointing the historic masonry.
The project is expected to be complete by mid-2020.
Architectural Renovators previously oversaw the transformation of the city’s historic Greyhound station, which is now a BRU Burger Bar restaurant.
