Hanover officials said this week the grant fills a gap in funding caused by a significant increase in costs for the project.
The total cost of the project is $906,000. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources awarded a grant to the project, which was matched by the town, but officials say the cost increase occurred in the time between the grant application was submitted and the grant was awarded.
The project is already underway with the revitalization of the tennis courts in the park that was funded in part by the Southwestern Jefferson County Consolidated School District. A spokesperson said the installation of new lighting remains to be completed.
Crews will also upgrade the buildings behind the baseball diamond in the park, which will include adding new restrooms. The walking path in the park will be extended around the entire park and will be handicap-accessible and include new lighting, the town said.
A new storage building is planned for the park as well.
“[This grant] will tremendously enhance the Town of Hanover Parks Department,” Hanover Town Council President Debbie Kroger said in a news release. “The Foundation’s generosity will have a measurable impact on the lives of many residents of all ages.”
Construction on the upgraded and new buildings is slated to begin next week. An estimated time frame for completion was not provided.
“Parks enrich a community and build connections among residents,” Bethany Legacy Foundation CEO Dora Anim said. “This investment in the city of Hanover will improve the lives of residents today and for generations to come.”
Hanover is located about 95 miles southeast of Indianapolis.
