Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the city is in the early stages of planning for growth at the Hammond Sportsplex, which has basketball, volleyball and indoor soccer courts.
The 135,000-square-foot complex opened in 2018. Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott says the complex brings in more than $1 million in revenue each year from users, which includes traveling youth sports leagues. He says it is generated $250,000 annually just in concession stand sales.
“The Sportsplex is completely overfilled after just a few years,” said McDermott. “The basketball and volleyball make most of the money, but the soccer side does well as well.”
McDermott says the plans are still in the early stages and details like the square footage of the addition or the number of additional courts have not yet been determined.
The sports facility was built on property where Woodmar Mall once stood in Hammond. It was demolished in 2006.
