The city of Hammond has completed a $6 million expansion and upgrade of its filtration plant. Mayor Thomas McDermott says the project includes new switch gears, motor starters and generators in an effort to increase reliability and ensure the plant never loses electric power.

Additionally, a 1982 750 KW generator was replaced with an auto-start, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emission-compliant 1,000 KW generator. The city says the plant can now produce 50 Millions of Gallons Per Day of water under diesel generator power.

With the system’s upgrades, the city says power is seamlessly transferred to the plant, and the plant’s functions are restored in only a few minutes, ensuring residents maintain running water.

According to the city, upgrades were made on the 1950’s and 1970’s electrical equipment because of a lack of replacement parts and support for the old equipment. The upgraded technology is expected to increase the plant’s life cycle to 20 to 25 years.
