The University of Notre Dame and South Bend community leaders will break ground Monday on a new community center and gathering place on the city’s near northeast side. The new Robinson Community Learning Center will replace the current facility, near the Eddy Street Commons complex, just south of Notre Dame’s campus.

The Robinson Center offers educational programming for youth and adults.

“We are excited that the new building will bring opportunities, will honor our past and will uphold the RCLC culture and values,” said Jennifer Knapp Beudert, RCLC manager.

The current location opened in 2001 in a former shopping center. The new 12,600-square-foot center is nearly twice the size of the current center. The university says there is classroom and meeting space, as well as a technology lab and a library.

The project received financial support from numerous sources, including Indianapolis-based Kite Realty. Kite is the developer of a $300 million mixed-used complex that features apartments, townhouses, hotels and retail space.

The Robinson Community Center is scheduled for completion in 2020.
