The fundraising project is part of the CreatINg Places program run by Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA). Launched in 2016, CreatINg Places fundraising efforts are led by local governments or nonprofits and each project sets its goal between $5,000 and $50,000. If the goal is reached, the project gets that amount in matching funds from the IHCDA.
The foundation is seeking $10,000 in community support. According to the project’s description on the program’s website, the garden would be designed with young children in mind as a way to let kids experience and learn about the five senses of touch, sight, feel, smell—and in some cases—taste.
“We are excited to bring another program into Greensburg that allows children to work together towards total inclusion,” said Brendan Bridges, school resource officer at Greensburg Community Schools, in a press release. “The sensory garden will allow students to learn how nature can provide for everyone to live healthy lifestyles. This project will benefit students at each grade level in Greensburg Community Schools.”
Sensory gardens can also be good resources for children with developmental disabilities. The garden would be planted a short drive away from Greensburg Elementary School on Big Blue Ln.
Other recent projects that have hit their fundraising goal through the CreatINg Places program are improvements to restrooms in the town hall building in Gosport, improvements to a public park in Beverly Shores and a future build for a soccer field in Washington.
