The funding will provide temporary employment to more than 100 low-income seniors in six counties.
The funding from the grant, originally from the U.S. Department of Labor, will benefit seniors living in Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, Wabash and Whitley counties. They will participate in the federal Senior Community Service Employment Program, aiming to help older adults rejoin the work force by working in their community.
SCSEP Program Supervisor Jen Zamaites calls the program a "triple-win for older adults and the whole community." She says it helps more than 30 community organizations to carry out their missions, gives seniors on-the-job training and helps keep them healthy and connected to their communities.
The diocese has received the grant for 13 consecutive years. Organizations including the American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana, Fort Wayne Urban League and Whitley County Council on Aging take part in the program.
