The Merle E. and Elizabeth Jacobs Endowment Fund will be dedicated to supporting research and the Maple Scholars, the college’s summer research program.
“The major gift marks a pivotal moment in supporting a cornerstone of experiential learning at Goshen College,” the school said in a news release. “With this fund, students will have unparalleled opportunities to engage in diverse faculty-mentored research projects across all fields, amplifying their academic experiences.”
The funding comes from the estate of alumni Merle and Elizabeth Jacobs. Merle was a biology professor at Goshen and researched animal behaviors and biochemical genetics. Elizabeth was dedicated to environmental education and was a longtime school teacher. Merle died in 2008, and Elizabeth died in 2023.
“Collaborative research by students and faculty across the disciplines is a hallmark of academic excellence at Goshen College,” President Rebecca Stoltzfus said. “This generous gift from Merle and Elizabeth Jacobs will secure and expand our Maple Scholars program into the future, affecting the lives and careers of many students. We are immensely grateful.”
