The organization plans to use half of the 109,000-square-foot building, which will house a variety of services, including a new Excel Center high school for adults.
The building, located at 154 West Hively Avenue, has been closed since 2017 and will serve as the city’s new Neighborhood Opportunity Hub.
In addition to the Excel Center, Goodwill plans to use the space for The Academy career and technical education program, as well as its Nurse-Family Partnership program, which pairs nurses with first-time parents, and other workforce development services.
“Elkhart’s Excel Center has been rapidly growing, and this expansion will enable us to serve even more students,” Goodwill Industries of Michiana CEO Debie Coble said in a news release. “We’re thrilled to help enhance the quality of life, social services and economic opportunities in the neighborhood. Goodwill’s mission is to empower people to achieve their most abundant lives, and we’re grateful to be a partner in building a stronger community.”
Goodwill said it is partnering with the city of Elkhart and Heart City Health to transform the former Sears space as part of the city’s economic development diversification plan.
The Neighborhood Opportunity Hub will also include comprehensive health care, urgent care, and dental, mental and behavioral health care services.
The groundbreaking is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
