The two sports were previously added as “emerging sports” by the IHSAA in 2022.
By receiving full recognition, the IHSAA will now establish state tournaments for both sports, and says details on those events will be announced in the coming months.
Girls wrestling will be a winter sport, and boys volleyball will be a spring sport, the same as they had during the Emerging Sport Process.
The IHSAA said both sports have seen significant growth throughout the state over the last two years. Girls wrestling has more than 1,400 student-athletes representing 177 schools, while boys volleyball teams have increased to more than 100.
The last sports to receive full recognition by the association were unified flag football in 2018 and unified track & field in 2013.
The IHSAA also noted that a proposal to add girls lacrosse to the Emerging Sport Process was tabled until the board’s June meeting.
