The Kokomo Tribune reports the installation of the 24-inch pipeline is complete, and crews are now advancing to the restoration phase.
Merrillville-based Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO) is undertaking the project, known as Project Fusion, that expands the gas line in Cass, Miami and Howard counties.
The project is designed to provide natural gas service to the $2.5 billion electric vehicle battery plant currently being constructed in Kokomo by StarPlus Energy, a joint venture between Stellantis and Samsung SDI, according to the Tribune.
The restoration phase involves putting back together any land that was disturbed during the installation.
“So, the soft restoration’s like grass and top soil and all of those things and then the hard restoration is paving roads and that type of thing,” NIPSCO Public Affairs and Economic Development Manager Karen McLean told the publication. “But we basically leave a community the way we found it, oftentimes even better.”
NIPSCO also plans to conduct testing on the pipe to make sure everything runs smoothly. McLean said the pipeline should be in service by Oct. 1.
