Councilwoman Tai Adkins was elected president Tuesday, while Councilwoman Lori Latham was chosen as vice president. Both council members are Democrats and had unanimous support.
“I want you all to know that I will lead with integrity,” Adkins told fellow council members. “I will represent the city of Gary as well as our body with poise, with class and with all of the learnings and teachings that I’ve acquired during my first term.”
Adkins has served as president since late August after former Council President William Godwin resigned. Prior, she had been serving as vice president, a role she’s held since 2021.
Councilwoman Mary Brown, who is in her 24th year on the council, told the Times it’s the first time she can remember an all-female leadership team.
