Our partners at Lakeshore Public Radio report the Valparaiso City Council last week approved $27 million in bonds for a planned sports and recreation campus on the city’s east side.
Plans for the project were first unveiled in October. The 248-acre site near State Road 49 is slated to include seven turf fields, natural walking paths, an outdoor plaza and multiple playgrounds across four sections.
An additional $5.8 million was approved for the related Memorial Parkway extension, which is designed to improve accessibility to the park.
The council had previously approved $4.7 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to reimburse the city’s redevelopment commission for the purchase of the land.
The city hopes to begin construction on the park this spring. The project is slated to be completed by summer 2024.
Additionally, the city council approved up to $23 million for water infrastructure improvements, including four new production wells.
