An Indiana native, Jenkins is in his 13th year of teaching and has been at Franklin since 2013. He began his teaching career at the American Christian Academy in Ibadan, Nigeria in 2007. He came back to the U.S. the following year to teach in Alabama.
Jenkins currently teaches 10th grade honors and general English/language arts. He also teaches the dual-credit Advanced College Project Composition Course for Indiana University.
“Eric is a selfless educator and a consummate professional. He is constantly looking for ways to grow in order to impact student learning,” Franklin Community High School Principal Steven Ahaus said in a news release. “He values his colleagues and the power of collaboration in education. The great ones make the challenging tasks look easy, and Eric makes creating an amazing classroom environment look simple.”
By virtue of being named Indiana Teacher of the Year, Jenkins will represent Indiana on the national level. The IDOE said he will also work to help elevate the teaching profession in Indiana.
Teachers are nominated for the statewide honor by their schools. The finalists are selected by a committee made up of former Teachers of the Year, IDOE staff, educational organization leaders, business and community leaders, and higher education representatives.
