Athletes will descend on the city from April 26 through 28 at the Plassman Athletic Center of the Turnstone Center for Children and Adults with Disabilities. The facility has 190,000 square feet of adaptive event space and four basketball courts.
The move gives Indiana the national championships for the first time. However, the Turnstone Center has held several NWBA regional tournaments before.
“Our community is renowned for its hospitality, and it has embraced adaptive sports with enthusiasm,” Turnstone CEO Mike Mushett said. “Witnessing some of the best wheelchair basketball our country has to offer in Turnstone’s Plassman Athletic Center Fieldhouse will be a highlight of the season.”
The championships expect to host over 300 athletes and 800 attendees from across the country to which the organization expects its largest women’s national championship ever. Fort Wayne will also host the second year of the military division.
“The team in Fort Wayne – Visit Fort Wayne and Turnstone – put together an impressive bid and are committed to elevating our championship events to the next level,” said Matt Pierre, NWBA Board of Directors, and National Tournaments Evaluation Team member. “Coming off our first-ever Military National Championship and our largest Women’s National Championship, we are excited to build upon this momentum and believe our members will love the experience that will be offered.”
Turnstone is one of nine U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Sites in the country, earning the designation in 2018. The Plassman Athletic Center last week hosted the USA Boccia 2023 National Championships.
