Bandemer has assumed the office on a temporary basis following the passing of Mayor Tom Henry on Thursday.
Bandemer was named deputy mayor in 2013 and previously served as vice president of downtown development for the Fort Wayne-Allen County Economic Development Alliance, now known as Greater Fort Wayne Inc.
He also served as the city’s economic development director from 1981-1986, the city said in a news release.
“Usually on occasions like this, the swearing-in of a mayor, would be a cause for celebration. However, that is not the case in this situation. Rather, it is to reassure the public that the business of running this city will continue as it has under the leadership of Tom Henry,” Bandemer said during the swearing-in ceremony. “My tenure in this position will be short, but nonetheless important. I welcome the support and counsel of the city employees, the city council, and the city at large during this transition period.”
Bandemer will serve as acting mayor until the Allen County Democratic Party conducts a caucus to select a new mayor who will complete Henry’s term.
Additionally, Gary Moor was sworn in as deputy mayor, succeeding Bandemer. Moor has served as the city’s controller since April 2018.
