FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Fort Wayne Mayor Sharon Tucker joined local government leaders Thursday to cut the ribbon on the city’s $15 million Avenue of Autos project.
The city acquired and converted three buildings that will now serve as the home of the city’s radio shop, fleet management department and traffic operations department.
Plans for the project were first announced by former Mayor Tom Henry in February 2022. The city says the effort created “significant” cost savings to taxpayers as building new facilities would have cost nearly $35 million.
The three buildings, according to the city, provide additional and upgrades space for each department. For the traffic operations department specifically, the move consolidates three previously separate locations into one centralized space.
“The Avenue of Autos development is a critical and innovative investment that enhances the workplace for our employees while setting a new standard for the services we provide,” Tucker said in a news release. “By raising the bar, this development ensures we’re providing the tools and environment needed to deliver exceptional results, ultimately improving the quality of life in our community.”
The project was funded using existing city funds, according to the city.
The city previously said it planned to either demolish, repurpose or sell the departments’ previous facilities.
