The three-term mayor, who left office at the end of last year, will help communities develop their own strategies for economic growth, the firm said in a Monday news release.
During his time as mayor, DeBaun helped establish an adult high school, bolstered child care support for working families, created a countywide scholarship program, and led a $23 million downtown redevelopment project.
“A lot of economic development projects represent a piece of the whole puzzle,” DeBaun said in the release. “I’m more of a big-picture guy. I’ll ask communities to focus on how issues are interrelated and raise opportunities for addressing key needs.”
DeBaun worked in public service for more than two decades, including roles as a probation officer and as head of the Shelbyville building and planning commissions, before being elected as mayor in 2011.
“The results under Mayor DeBaun’s leadership in Shelbyville remind us of the power that local communities have to transform their outcomes and opportunities,” TPMA CEO Mark Gramelspacher said. “We’re delighted to have him work with our team to help catalyze similarly transformative results in communities across our state and country.”
Formerly known as Thomas P. Miller and Associates, TPMA provides a variety of workforce and economic development consulting services to organizations and communities. The firm, founded in 1989, was named to the IBJ’s Fast 25 list in 2016 and 2017.
