Mayor Joe Hogsett will join other city and community leaders Monday to kick off the demolition of the former RCA manufacturing plant, which has been vacant for more than 25 years.
The city says, in its dormancy, the facility has created environmental and structural safety concerns with the remaining structures being subject to crime, violence and fires.
The Near East Area Renewal community organization and the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development have received a $200,000 area-wide planning grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The funding will kickstart a two-year effort to develop a revitalization strategy for the area, which is now known as Sherman Park.
The demolition ceremony is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Monday. Hogsett, IMPD Chief Bryan Roach, City-County Councilor Blake Johnson and NEAR Executive Director John Franklin Hay will speak at the event, followed by the beginning of the demolition.
