Dr. Woody Myers made the announcement Wednesday in Indianapolis alongside former Congressman Baron Hill, who is serving as his campaign chairman.
Myers became the youngest state health commissioner in Indiana history in 1985, serving under both Governors Robert Orr and Evan Bayh. He currently owns Myers Ventures LLC, a consulting firm for hospitals, healthcare companies and provider organizations.
In a news release, Myers said he would focus on education, healthcare and job creation during the campaign.
"I learned very early in my career that the people with the best health were the people who got the best health care," Myers said. "The people with the best insurance are the people with the best jobs. And the people with the best jobs are the people with the best education. All Hoosiers deserve the best schools, the best health care and a state that is creating jobs and opportunities for workers and their families faster than wages are rising."
Myers is not the only one looking for the Democratic nomination. In June, State Senator Eddie Melton (D-Gary) announced he was forming a gubernatorial exploratory committee and embark on a statewide listening tour as he considered running for governor.
Governor Eric Holcomb has not officially announced he is seeking re-election in 2020. However, the governor is set to make a "major announcement" Saturday at the historic Hoosier Gym in Knightstown.
