(NYSE: DOW) chief executive officer and his wife have donated $10 million to the University of Notre Dame. The gift from William and Linda Stavropoulos will launch a biophysical research center on the South Bend campus.
Bill is a Notre Dame graduate and has been on the school’s College of Science Advisory Council since 1988. He is founder and president of the Michigan Baseball Foundation and spent 39 years at Dow, advancing to serve as chairman and CEO from 2002-2004. Linda was a school teacher and is now president of the William and Linda Stavropoulos Family Foundation. Their two children are Notre Dame grads.
Provost Thomas Burish says "the interconnectedness of biology and physics to understanding living systems is longstanding, but in recent years has become even more central to scientific research. Bill and Linda’s generous and visionary gift will give us the opportunity to significantly expand our work in this arena. We are most grateful."
The result will create the Stavropoulos Center for Interdisciplinary Biophysics, which the university says will bring together thought leaders to work together in pursuit of novel approaches to cancer, stem cell biology, imaging, therapeutic development and other research topics.
College of Science Dean Mary Galvin says the gift will "enable us to attract a cluster of elite research talent to significantly strengthen science and biophysics at Notre Dame. This field of knowledge is crucial as we seek to explore the physical principles of biology and make advancements in human health."
