The third president of Bethel College in Mishawaka has died. Rev. Albert Beutler graduated from Bethel in 1951, became the school’s first men’s basketball coach in 1958, and led the school from 1974 to 1982. He was 89 years old. 

The college says, during his tenure as president, Beutler was responsible for constructing the Dining Commons and Eastwood Apartments, eliminating the school’s operational debt, increasing assets by 60 percent, and creating an associate’s degree with 11 concentration areas and a master’s degree in Christian education. 

Beutler received two Sagamore of the Wabash honors by former governors Otis Bowen and Robert Orr. In 2013, Bethel College renamed its athletic hall of fame the Dr. Albert J. Beutler Hall of Fame. 

Services for Beutler are set for Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the Everest-Rohrer Chapel/Fine Arts Center on the Bethel campus.
