Indiana Landmarks says the 91-year-old gym in the town of Bourbon is owned by Triton School Corp., but because a new activities center is being built at the high school, the school system doesn’t really need the building.
It was built in 1928 to meet state rules for physical education.
The nonprofit says the gym has an uncertain future as the school corporation has no plans for the property and no funds for its ongoing maintenance.
Triton School Corporation is inviting proposals for the long-term lease or sale of the gym. Ideally, individuals or organizations will have ideas to repurpose the historic building and funds for its rehabilitation.
Indiana Landmarks says the Bourbon Gym is listed in the National Register, which could make it eligible for preservation tax credits.
