Helmich, who spent 16 years as president of Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, will begin his new role November 14.
Helmich will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the foundation, including the development of fundraising efforts and the distribution of scholarships and grants, according to the IHSAA. The organization says fundraising was one of Helmich’s main responsibilities while at Cathedral, where he helped bring it more than $3 million each year.
"The IHSAA Foundation is very fortunate to obtain the expertise and excellence of Steve Helmich," said IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox. "The combination of all his professional experiences provides a robust portfolio by which our Foundation will grow and prosper. I greatly look forward to working with Steve as we collectively labor to build a dynamic organization benefiting IHSAA member schools and Hoosier student athletes."
Helmich most recently served as executive vice president of the fundraising division of Damar Services Inc. in Indianapolis. An Indiana University graduate, he spent 12 years as a teacher and coach at high schools in Noblesville, West Lafayette, Richmond and Columbus.
"Indiana high school athletics helped shape my life from my formative years through my adult life and I look forward to building this Foundation which will have a profound impact on the lives of the young men and women who will participate in high school athletics in our state," said Helmich.
The IHSAA Executive Committee established the foundation in 2015 and says, as funding becomes available, the foundation will award college scholarships to student-athletes and help support special projects at member schools through a grant program.
