FAA Funds Boost Porter County Airport Project

The Porter County Regional Airport has secured a more than $1.4 million Federal Aviation Administration grant. The funding will support continuing efforts to reconstruct its main runway.

Airport Director Kyle Kuebler says the grant is the "third round of programming, which enables the Porter County Regional Airport to continue the reconstruction of its most critical infrastructure asset, its primary east-west runway, allowing the Airport to safely and effectively continue to provide its air transportation accessibility and convenience to our community and region."

The funds build on additional support from the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority. Chief Executive Officer Bill Hanna says "just like the airport in Gary, the Porter County Airport is a significant driver of regional economic activity. A 2012 estimate put its economic impact at more than $17 million annually."

In a release detailing the funding, Congressman Pete Visclosky (D-IN) says "investing in transportation infrastructure like the Porter County Airport is essential to growing the Northwest Indiana economy and drawing new families and businesses to our region."
