The Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority is supporting the initiative and will double its total to $100,000 if the organization meets its goal by Aug. 19 through the CreatINg Places program.
The project had raised $1,350 from five donors as of Thursday afternoon.
The second floor of the museum includes office space, a registrar office, a large wartime research library, private event space, and archives/collection storage that houses over 9,000 items, the museum said on its Patronicity page.
“Because of the important work being done on the second floor, it is crucial that our volunteers, staff, board members, and the public have access,” the museum said.
The new lift will make the second floor available to patrons and the organization aims to complete the project by December.
“An understanding of and respect for the past is the centerpiece of any thriving community, and every Evansville resident deserves the opportunity to learn about its influence on United States history,” Crouch said in a news release. “CreatINg Places has allowed communities across the state to culturally engage their citizens, and this proposed addition to the Evansville Wartime Museum ensures residents of all abilities can better understand our city’s unique place in history.”
CreatINg Places provides up to $50,000 in grant matches to not-for-profits and local governments pursuing projects costing at least $10,000.
Since 2016, the IHCDA said projects through the program have raised over $8.2 million in public funds with $6.8 million matched by the agency.
