A global agreement has been reached between Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly and Co. (NYSE: LLY) and Ypsomed in Switzerland to further an automated insulin delivery system. Lilly says it will commercialize the system, which remains in development and will incorporate an insulin pump made by the Swiss company.

Lilly Vice President of Product Development for Connected Care Marie Schiller says the agreement will allow for more options for people to manage diabetes.

“People who use insulin, along with their healthcare providers, need simple, effective tools that lead to improved outcomes, and Ypsomed is developing an automated insulin delivery system with several exciting features that can help meet that need,” said Schiller.

Ypsomed’s insulin pump has been available in Europe since 2016, and is now offered in 21 countries as the mylife YpsoPump.

Ypsomed says it also will present a version of the pump to be cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to use in the automated delivery of insulin in 2022. If the pump is cleared, Lilly would have exclusive rights to sell the pump in the U.S.
