The ranking is based on the companies’ corporate responsibility and ESG (environment, social and corporate) governance.
Indianapolis-based Corteva Agriscience (NYSE: CTVA) is the highest ranked Indiana company, coming in at number 25. Columbus-based Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) is ranked 35, followed by Evansville-based Berry Global Group (NYSE: BERY) at number 47.
Jasper-based Kimball International (Nasdaq: KBAL) enters the ranking at number 83.
“Being recognized for the second year as one of America’s Most Responsible Companies is testament to our Company’s commitment to creating innovative, sustainable packaging and products that are designed to make life better for people and the planet,” said Berry Chairman and CEO Tom Salmon. “ESG principles are increasingly embedded in everything we do. And we continue to believe this represents a differentiation in how we serve our customers, partners, and team members.”
Four other Indiana companies were included in the list, including Allison Transmission (269), NiSource (280), Franklin Electric (400), and THOR Industries (416).
The rankings are based on key performance indicators, such as waste, emission and energy use, among the environmental category. The companies are also measured on leadership diversity, philanthropy and economic performance.
“It can be hard to tell whether such a statement means a corporation really tries to treat its customers, employees and planet decently or is just public relations blather. Talking the talk is easy, but walking the walk is hard,” said Newsweek Editor Nancy Cooper.
Newsweek says it also conducted a survey of 11,000 U.S. citizens to gauge their perceptions of the companies in terms of corporate social responsibility.
The top-ranked corporation is HP Inc., followed by General Mills, and Michigan-based Whirlpool Corp.
