She currently serves as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and will be the first woman to serve as president of Earlham.
Houtman earned her bachelor of arts degree from Pomona College in California, a master’s degree in anthropology from UCLA and a doctorate in zoology from the University of Oxford. She will begin as Earlham president July 1.
Earlham Board of Trustees Chair David Stump says Houtman stood out "because so much of her experience and beliefs match well with the values and mission of our college." She succeeds Alan Price, who announced his resignation in June after only one year on the job.
