President Anne Houtman says the school is utilizing an unused area of campus for the new student destination.
Richmond-based Thor Construction Co. and DeMao Retail Consultants have agreed to a 60-year lease for the property with the university. Earlham says up to four tenants could occupy the shopping center.
“I’m excited by the potential this project has to strengthen connections between the College and our neighbors in Richmond in a way that wasn’t available before,” said Houtman.
The university says the project is the first of several planned for the next five years, including renovating or replacing several houses on the west side of College Avenue.
“Our priority is ensuring that this development will meet our architectural standards and match the aesthetic appeal of our campus. We are committed to adding to the quality of life for our students and neighbors,” said Senior Vice President for Finance and Adminstration Stacy Lutz Davidson.
Earlham says the development is expected to open late this year or early 2023 at National Road West and College Avenue.
