North Carolina-based Duke Energy Corp. (NYSE: DUK) has officially named Melody Birmingham-Byrd president of its Indiana operations. She has been serving as a senior vice president at the utility's Plainfield regional headquarters. Birmingham-Byrd succeeds Doug Esamann, who is now president of Duke's Midwest and Florida Regions. Birmingham-Byrd has worked as senior vice president of Midwest delivery operations for the past three years, managing distribution systems in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. She worked as vice president of Progress Energy Carolinas' Southern Region before the two utilities merged in 2012.

She has a bachelor's degree from Purdue University and a master's from Strayer University.

Duke announced Esamann's promotion last month. He had been president of Duke Energy Indiana since 2010. Esamann has worked for the utility for more than 35 years.
