The program provides free, age-appropriate books each month to children from birth to age five, regardless of family income.
The beginning of the program in Porter County is part of a statewide expansion of the program to all 92 counties that was approved by Gov. Eric Holcomb earlier this year. The program was previously available in 54 counties and partially available in eight more.
The Porter County Community Foundation, Porter County Public Library System, and Westchester Public Library System partnered to bring the program to Porter County.
“The Porter County Community Foundation, along with First Things First Porter County, is pleased to partner with our library systems to bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to our community.” foundation CEO Bill Higbie said in a news release. “The earlier we get books into the hands of kids, the better off we all will be.”
Families can now register their children in the program at the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library website. Each child will receive their first book within six to eight weeks after registration and will continue to receive books each month until the child’s fifth birthday.
The statewide expansion of the program was part of Holcomb’s 2024 Next Level Agenda. It is being funded by a two-year, $6 million appropriation that Holcomb approved in May. The state will provide $2 million in the first year and $4 million in the second.
