INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A mobile application that seeks to reduce medication adherence errors took top prize this past weekend at the Hoosier Code 4 Health, the first health-focused code-a-thon in Indiana.
The winning team, comprised of health technology entrepreneur Willie Pritchett and web designer/developer Carolyn Bernier, met at the event, formed a concept, and developed their solution all within the course of the weekend. The result was MedMaid, an application intended to reduce medication errors by helping clinicians monitor their patients' drug usage – www.MedMaid.com.
“Taking your pills at the right time and in the right quantity is critical to the management of any chronic disease,” said Pritchett. “MedMaid addresses this issue by incentivizing patients to track their usage and notifying a monitoring clinician when there are adherence problems.”
The Hoosier Code 4 Health, sponsored by Develop Indy, TechPoint, and Ice Miller, was organized by Social Health Insights and hosted by Lilly's Clinical Open Innovation Center in Indianapolis. Participants had just over 24 hours to explore collaborative partnerships, form teams, develop solutions, and prepare pitches to a panel of expert clinician and technology judges. The first place team, MedMaid, and second place team, a group from Centric Consulting – www.CentricConsulting.com – took home cash prizes totaling $5,000 and in-kind prizes valued at over $4,000 including memberships to Launch Fishers and consultations from Developer Town, Arcus – a cloud solutions provider, and the ISBDC.
“An event like the Hoosier Code 4 Health shows that innovation doesn't have to come from the coasts and it doesn't have to take large amounts of time and capital for development,” said Brian Norris, CEO of Social Health Insights. “The quality of the teams and solutions this weekend shows that truly disruptive technology solutions can be created from a rapid cycle development environment like the code-a-thon.”
The Hoosier Code 4 Health was set as the finale to Indy Innovation Week, a series of three technology events taking place in Indianapolis over four days. The Innovation Showcase was held at the Dallara IndyCar Factory on July 11th, the Hoosier Healthcare Innovation Challenge as held on the campus of IUPUI on July 12th, and the Hoosier Code 4 Health was July 13th and 14th.
“There's a palpable sense of energy and excitement around Indy's tech community today,” said Matt Kirby, Director of Business Attraction and Development for Develop Indy, a business unit of the Indy Chamber. “The Hoosier Code 4 Health shows us what’s possible when we bridge that tech talent with the problems and opportunities we see in healthcare.”
