Our partners at WPTA-TV report the party will hold a caucus on April 20 to determine the new mayor, which will be preceded by a town hall on April 18 featuring all candidates vying for the spot.
Henry passed away last Thursday at the age of 72 following a short battle with stomach cancer, the diagnosis for which was announced just a month before.
Deputy Mayor Karl Bandemer was sworn in as acting mayor the following day. Bandemer has previously said he will not be putting his name on the ballot for the caucus.
The caucus will take place at the Lincoln Financial Center at Parkview Field at 10:30 a.m. on the 20th. Anyone looking to run are required to file a CEB-5 form with the Allen County Democratic Party by 10:30 a.m. on April 17, after which the party’s central committee will review all filings.
Thus far, Fort Wayne City Councilor At-Large Michelle Chambers and Democratic Precinct Committeeman Jorge Fernandez have announced their campaigns to fill the vacancy, according to WPTA.
During the caucus, each candidate will have five minutes to speak. A candidate must receive 50% of the vote plus one to win, and only Democratic precinct chairs are eligible to vote.
The town hall on April 18 will take place at the David Hefner Pavilion from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
