DePauw University President Lori White has been selected to join a task force of academic leaders charged with helping to foster free expression on college campuses. White, who became DePauw’s president in July, will work with Academic Leaders Task Force on Campus Free Expression to identify practices, programs and policies that support the mission.

The university says the 12-member task force is co-chaired by former Governor Christine Gregoire of Washington state, chief executive officer of Challenge Seattle, and former Governor Jim Douglas of Vermont, executive in residence at Middlebury College.

“Institutions of higher education have the critical role of creating leaders the world needs,” said White. “To do so, we must foster two important values: Freedom of speech and expression and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Our campuses and our world are enriched, our communities become more equitable and we develop open-minded leaders when we explore and are open to discussing and debating a range of ideas and perspectives, freely expressed, while understanding these ideals within the context of the historical experiences of diverse communities.”

The task force will consider issues such as adoption of a free expression statement, templated approaches for college presidents and leadership teams, procedures that ensure freedom of expression is informative and harmonizes with other policies, as well as guidelines for leadership comments on current political and social issues.
