The two organizations announced plans in August for the “Y” to takeover the facility at the hospital.
The Franciscan fitness center will close Saturday, followed by a 14-day “round-the-clock” renovation of the facility. Plans are for the work to be completed on December 20.
The publication says construction crews will be removing all the flooring, replacing it with a softer rubber that is easier on the joints. The “Y” says much of the equipment will be replaced, a gymnastics, cheer and dance center will be added.
“We believe that there is an appetite for kids and families to be able to have a place to stay healthy and active,” said Crossroads YMCA Chief Executive Officer Jay Buckmaster. “There is a lack of affordable and accessible opportunities for kids.”
Buckmaster says every week the Crown Point Y’s cheer, gymnastics and ninja programs host about 1,200 kids. He says If the Schererville facility sees the similar levels of demand, the Y may look to build a 100,000 square-foot expansion.
