The Vigo County Capital Improvement Board has selected Garmong Construction Services in Terre Haute as the construction manager for the $25 million project, which could open by the summer of 2020.
The CIB says the next step is to approve the beginning of contract negotiations with Garmong before the project can continue forward. The company was one of three who responded to a Request for Proposals last month and was unanimously chosen following interviews with each firm.
"This convention center will be a staple in our community and will contribute to Vigo County’s economic growth exponentially," said Jon Marvel, chairman of the CIB and Vigo County Commissioner. "With a project this large, we need the best of the best. Garmong’s score across the committee was significantly higher."
The project is being funded through commitments from the city of Terre Haute, Vigo County, and the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Vigo County Council approved a 1 percent food and beverage tax, which went into effect this month, to cover its portion of the project.
The CIB in July released a preliminary schedule for the project, which projected completion in 2020.
