The Star Press in Muncie reports the House Ways and Means Committee Monday approved an amendment to Senate Bill 567 that includes the Muncie Community School Corp. in proposed legislation designating the districts as "distressed political subdivisions."
Gary Schools have a deficit of nearly $19 million, while Muncie Schools are behind around $18 million. The bill calls for putting in place an emergency manager to handle the districts’ finances. "Significant" portions of the school district’s finances must be dedicated to the eliminating debt under the bill. During testimony at the Statehouse, several leaders in the Muncie community argued the school should have been able to decide whether to be included in the proposed legislation.
