Coats co-founded the institute in 2004 with Jay Hein, who currently serves as CEO. He represented Indiana in the U.S. Senate from 1989-1999 and from 2011-2017. He also represented Indiana’s 4th congressional district from 1981-1989.
Coats is also a former director of national intelligence for the United States and the U.S. ambassador to Germany.
Sagamore Institute President Teresa Lubbers said in a news release that there is no one better suited to continuing the work of the organization.
“Together with Jay Hein, a vision was cast for an action-oriented, heartland-based think tank that put ideas into action for the betterment of society,” said Lubbers, who was named president in July 2022. “Now, two decades later, we have the privilege to welcome him home and leverage his experience and wisdom as we work to build a safer, stronger, and more civil democracy.”
The institute said as a member of the board, Coats will help direct its works on three primarily pillars: citizenship (civic leadership), economic opportunity, and national security.
Sagamore is celebrating its 20th anniversary next year. Coats said while his time in politics is behind him, his time in service to the state and nation is not.
“From its founding almost 20 years ago, Sagamore has been committed to building enduring solutions to some of the world’s biggest challenges, engaging those challenges with civility, and connecting the heartland with the world,” Coats said. “I’m excited about continuing and expanding the good work Sagamore is doing by partnering with Jay, Teresa, and the rest of the Sagamore team in this new chapter.”
