Citizens Looks to Future of Former Coke Plant

Subscribe NowIndianapolis-based Citizens Energy Group has landed funding to help form a strategy to redevelop its former coke manufacturing site. The $375,000 grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration will support a year-long study on the best use of the plant and surrounding property.
Citizens is working with the city of Indianapolis on the effort, as well as several community organizations including the Local Initiative Support Corp., the Indiana Public Policy Institute, Central Indiana Community Foundation and Reconnecting to Our Waterways."
Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett calls the grant "a victory for Indianapolis neighborhoods." He says the study will give Indianapolis "the chance to develop a transformational vision for the southeast side of the city."
Citizens is in the final stages of demolishing the plant, which closed in 2007 amid rising foreign competition.
