The Indiana Career Council is planning regional forums next month to help with planning the state's education, training and career development efforts. Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann will be attending the meetings, which begin May 9 in Fort Wayne. April 25, 2014

News Release

Indianapolis, Ind. – Lieutenant Governor Sue Ellspermann and the Indiana Career Council will host regional forums in May seeking input into the strategic planning process for the State of Indiana’s education, job skills training, and career development system.

The forums are being offered to provide business, education, workforce, economic and community development leaders an opportunity to learn about, and provide input and feedback into, the strategies and tactics that the Indiana Career Council are considering as it develops its strategic plan for aligning the state’s multi-faceted system.

“We encourage business owners, education officials, and community members to join us in sharing ideas and observations as we work at better aligning Indiana’s efforts in education, job training and career development,” said Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann, vice chair of the Career Council and facilitator of the regional forums. “Your assessments and hands-on experience can serve to guide our discussions in seeking better accessibility and interfaces with students, job seekers and employers.”

Over the past several months, the Career Council has received input and testimony during its monthly meetings to shape the plan as its four Task Forces seek to delve into critical areas of Employment Growth, the Indiana Workforce Intelligence System, Community Colleges Best Practices and Program Alignment and Talent Development. Presenters have included the Building and Construction Trades, Indiana State Chamber of Commerce, Indiana Association of Career and Technical Educators, Ivy Tech and Vincennes University.

The Career Council is working to meet a July 1 deadline to finalize its strategic plan, and will host the regional forums in Ft. Wayne, Bloomington, and Indianapolis. RSVP’s for the forums may be sent to ceci@ceci.in.gov, and should include date of event.

About the Career Council:

The Indiana Career Council was established by the General Assembly in 2013 to bring together the leaders of Indiana’s education, job skills training, and career training system to ensure that Indiana’s workforce develops the 21st century skills needed by the state’s current and prospective employer community. Their goal of developing a strategic plan seeks to align the activities and goals of partners in this system, and improve access and delivery to Hoosier residents.

The 19-member council is chaired by the Governor, and includes executive-level leaders from the Department of Education, the Department of Workforce Development, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, the Commission for Higher Education, the Family Social Services Administration, Ivy Tech Community College, and four at-large members, representing the employer and organized labor communities. In addition to these voting members, the Council includes two members of both Chambers of the Indiana General Assembly and the presidents of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, the Indiana Manufacturers Association, and Associated Builders and Contractors as non-voting advisory members.
