Akyumen Industries says the facility, which will produce 5G smartphones, will create more than 2,000 jobs over three to five years.
Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana previously reported the company is investing $100 million in the project. The facility will be located at the site of the former Ivanhoe Gardens housing complex on the city’s west side.
Akyumen says construction on the facility is expected to begin before the end of the first quarter. The manufacturing plant is slated to be fully operational within two years.
The company says the Genesis Convention Center in Gary will serve as a pre-production site for the 5G smartphones while the facility is under construction. The company did not say whether it had reached a deal with the city for the convention center space.
