The nearly $35 billion spending plan includes a 4.3 percent funding increase for schools and a big boost in funding for the Indiana Department of Child Services.
House Republicans introduced the proposal to lawmakers last week. The bill passed on a party-line vote, according to our partners at WIBC.
"The House budget proposal funds Indiana’s vital services and addresses top priorities while remaining fiscally responsible and maintaining healthy reserves," said House Ways and Means Committee co-chairman Todd Huston (R-Fishers). "We kept our commitment to educators and Hoosier children by increasing funding for education, school safety and the Department of Child Services. This is a strong start, and I look forward to working on this budget with our Senate colleagues."
The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration. Both chambers have until the end of April to agree on a final version of the plan.
