Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the Indiana Department of Transportation may open the replacement for the Nine-Span Bridge early next month. The paper says the bridge could open December 9, which is a few weeks earlier than anticipated. Illinois-based Dunnet Bay Construction was awarded the contract to demolish the old bridge and construct the replacement.
The Federal Highway Administration had rated the Nine-Span Bridge as being in “poor” condition. INDOT says officials have not picked out a name for the new bridge. The span stretches over Hammond's Gibson Yard rail facility and provides access to East Chicago and a South Shore train station.
