Tom Kinghorn served as vice president for business affairs and treasurer of the board from 1980 to 2009, and he was a member of the Ball State University Foundation board for 32 years. He started at Ball State in 1966, the year he earned a master’s degree in business administration from the university. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration there.
Kinghorn is now president and CEO of the George and Frances Ball Foundation, a position he has held since 2018.
“Tom Kinghorn served Ball State University for over 40 years, helping to bring notoriety to the University,” Stephen Brand, chairman of the chamber’s board of directors, said in a news release. “Since his retirement from Ball State, Kinghorn has worked tirelessly to launch the Cradle to Career initiative, working to help ensure children are kindergarten-ready. He is a dedicated servant to our community and is very deserving of the Chamber’s Legacy Award.”
The Legacy Award is presented annually to an individual who has made extraordinary and sustained contributions to the Muncie-Delaware County community and provided leadership in the development of initiatives that promote goodwill and community pride, the news release said.
“Tom Kinghorn is very worthy of this Chamber honor,” Chamber President and CEO Elizabeth Rowray said. “He is an incredible human being. The many ways he has served our community over the years is a wonderful example of how we should all strive to serve others, and we are honored to present this award to him this year.”
The award will be presented at a Sept. 28 Legacy Dinner at Horizon Convention Center in downtown Muncie.
