Regional Development Authority leaders say the project, which will receive $9 million through the statewide Regional Cities Initiative, could attract national-level swimming events.
The 160,000 square-foot facility involves public and private partners including the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, the Elkhart Community School Corp. and the center’s eventual operator, Beacon Health Systems. The planned facility is unlike anything currently available in Michiana. Plans call for a fitness center, weight loss clinic, aquatic center with three pools and a diving well, locker rooms and multi-use community center with gymnasium and demonstration kitchen space. Leaders close to the plan expect it to draw tens of thousands of visitors to Elkhart. It will be located on a site that includes a former YMCA and will also offer river views and outdoor gathering areas. The project could be complete as early as 2018.
